Dhaka, Jul 16 (V7N)- Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Opposition Leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has questioned how people could understand a 31-point reform proposal if they did not understand the four questions of the referendum.
He made the remarks at a discussion meeting organized by the Dhaka Metropolitan South unit of Jamaat-e-Islami at the Institution of Diploma Engineers in the capital on Thursday (July 16) morning, marking July Martyrs' Day.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said that reform was the biggest demand of the July movement and claimed that the issue of alleged vote manipulation would be revealed in the future.
Addressing the ruling BNP, he urged the party not to misuse the power of the majority. He said, “I will give my life, but I will not allow ‘24’ to disappear,” while calling for the commitments made during the July movement to be implemented.
He said the achievements of 2024 are recognized by everyone, but questioned why some people remain focused on the past. He added that without the events of 2024, Tarique Rahman would not have become Prime Minister and he himself would not have become the Leader of the Opposition.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman also said that a country cannot move forward while remaining divided over past issues and called on all sides to work together to build the future.
He raised questions over constitutional reform issues, saying that some teachers have been created without salaries and questioned the process of constitutional amendments.
The Jamaat chief said the struggle for implementing the referendum verdict would not be abandoned and claimed that if the issue could not be resolved in parliament, it would continue through public movements.
He also commented on Jamaat’s relationship with India, claiming that the party faces opposition from India but saying that Jamaat does not consider such pressure a concern.
