RANGAMATI, July 9 (V7N) – Authorities have suspended classes at all government primary schools in Bangladesh's Rangamati hill district on Thursday due to severe weather, landslide risks and the threat of flash floods caused by continuous heavy rainfall.
The District Primary Education Office said the decision was taken to ensure the safety of students as persistent rain has increased the risk of landslides and flooding across the district.
The closure applies to all government primary schools on July 9, while school offices will remain open. Authorities said further instructions on resuming classes will be issued depending on the weather situation.
District Primary Education Officer Md. Kafil Uddin confirmed the decision on Wednesday night, saying that heavy rainfall has triggered landslide concerns in several areas and caused flash floods along river routes, making travel unsafe for young students.
Continuous rainfall over the past several days has also disrupted road communications, caused waterlogging in low-lying areas and heightened the risk of landslides, prompting authorities to urge residents in vulnerable locations to move to designated shelters.
According to the local weather monitoring centre, 88.01 millimetres of rainfall were recorded between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
