Dhaka, Aug 27 (V7N) – On Tuesday marks the 49th death anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam, Bangladesh's national poet, widely revered as the "Rebel Poet" for his revolutionary spirit and humanistic vision.
Commemorative events are being held across Dhaka and other parts of the country to honor the legacy of Kazi Nazrul Islam on his 49th death anniversary. Known for his bold voice against injustice, colonialism, and religious extremism, Nazrul remains a powerful symbol of resistance and equality in Bengali literature and culture.
Various socio-cultural organizations have taken initiatives to pay tribute to the poet, including placing floral wreaths at his grave beside the Dhaka University Central Mosque. Public figures, artists, students, and admirers gathered to express their respect and reflect on his lasting impact on Bengali identity.
In the afternoon, a memorial discussion and cultural program is being organized by Bangla Academy at its premises. The event, scheduled for 4 PM at the Shamsur Rahman Seminar Room, will feature speeches by prominent literary scholars, poetry recitations, and musical performances based on Nazrul’s works.
Born in 1899 in present-day West Bengal, India, Kazi Nazrul Islam’s literary career was marked by an intense passion for justice, secularism, and unity. His poems, songs, and essays challenged social norms and colonial authority, earning him both praise and persecution. Despite suffering from a debilitating neurological illness in his later years, his influence endured across generations.
Nazrul passed away on August 29, 1976, in Dhaka. In recognition of his unparalleled contribution to the Bengali language and spirit of rebellion, he was given the status of the national poet of Bangladesh.
Observances serve as a reminder of his timeless message of humanity, equality, and resistance to oppression — values that continue to inspire both literature and social consciousness in Bangladesh and beyond.
