Chittagong, Aug 09 (V7N) – Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has urged people to remain vigilant against those seeking to undermine peace and stability in the country, stressing that a stable environment is essential for employment, investment and economic development.
He made the remarks at a house handover, donation and relief distribution program for people affected by recent floods in Banshkhali, Chittagong, on Sunday (August 9).
The Prime Minister said employment opportunities cannot be created without peace and order. He also emphasized the need to maintain a favorable environment for investors.
Urging opposition parties not to create confusion over the country's energy and power situation, Tarique Rahman said any alternative proposals regarding the energy crisis should be presented in Parliament.
He called for constructive political debate instead of misleading the public, saying Bangladesh could no longer afford to fall behind and that collective efforts were needed to improve people's lives.
The Prime Minister alleged that during the previous period of authoritarian rule, the country's energy and power sector had effectively been handed over to a small group of individuals and that various plans were adopted to serve their interests rather than the interests of the people.
He said the government was now working to restructure the sector and correct what he described as an unplanned system.
Speaking about the government's future energy plans, Tarique Rahman said resolving the energy crisis would take time. He said a proposal outlining the government's vision for the energy sector over the next 10 years would be presented in Parliament.
The Prime Minister also announced that the Family Card programme would be expanded following the completion of its pilot phase. The second phase is scheduled to begin on August 16, with the government planning to provide family cards to around 4.1 million families during the current fiscal year.
He reiterated that the government was working to improve people's living standards and create a more stable environment for economic and social development.
