Jul 17 (V7N) — Argentina captain Lionel Messi has strongly rejected allegations that his team has received favorable treatment from referees or FIFA during the ongoing FIFA World Cup, insisting that the Albiceleste reached the final solely through their performances on the pitch.
Following Argentina's 2-1 victory over England in the semi-finals, Messi responded to criticism that has persisted since the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where some fans and pundits claimed Argentina benefited from refereeing decisions and VAR interventions.
"Those comments hurt a lot," Messi said after the match.
"Nobody gave us any special advantage. We reached this stage because of our ability. People should think carefully before making such accusations so they don't regret them later."
Argentina have produced several dramatic comeback victories during the tournament, further fueling debate among critics. Messi, however, said the team has remained focused on its football rather than outside opinions.
"If we had lost to England, many people would have said all kinds of nonsense. But we didn't give them that opportunity. We know how well we play, so we don't care about what others say."
Tribute to Maradona
Messi also dedicated Argentina's semi-final victory to late football legend Diego Maradona, saying the team's success would have made the 1986 World Cup-winning captain proud.
"I'm sure Diego is watching from above with a smile. This day is special for him too. We are happy to give him this joy, and we dedicate this victory to him."
Final Challenge Awaits
Argentina have now reached their second consecutive FIFA World Cup final and will face Spain in the title decider at MetLife Stadium on July 19.
With another World Cup crown within reach, Messi and Argentina will aim to silence their critics once again and successfully defend their world title against a formidable Spanish side.
