Madrid, Sep 05 (V7N)- Real Betis ended Real Madrid's winning streak in La Liga with a 1-0 victory, after Kylian Mbappe missed a penalty in the final moments of the match.
The two teams faced each other at Betis' home ground, Estadio La Cartuja, on Friday (September 4).
Real Madrid came close to taking the lead in the first half. Vinicius Junior hit the post after receiving a pass from Arda Guler, while Mbappe was denied twice by excellent defensive interventions from Nathan Bernardo de Souza and Marc Bartra.
Betis increased the pressure after the break in search of a breakthrough. Nine minutes before the final whistle, Thibaut Courtois produced a brilliant save to deny Nelson Deusar's header. However, Troy Parrott reacted quickly to the rebound and fired Betis ahead. It was his first goal for the club.
Real Madrid thought they had equalized when Carlos Espin found the net with a volley from Vinicius Junior's cross. However, the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.
Madrid were then awarded a penalty after Vinicius was fouled inside the box. But in stoppage time, Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Vázquez made a superb save to deny Mbappe from the spot.
The victory ended Real Madrid's three-match winning run in La Liga under Jose Mourinho in his second spell as head coach.
Betis, meanwhile, moved level with Real Madrid on nine points after four matches. The club is also set to begin its second Champions League campaign next week.
