Miami, Jul 07 (V7N) — Argentina and Egypt will meet in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 on Monday in what will be the first-ever senior World Cup meeting between the two nations. While the fixture marks a historic occasion, the head-to-head record overwhelmingly favors the South American giants.

The footballing rivalry between the two countries dates back nearly a century. Their first encounter came in the 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games, where Argentina thrashed Egypt 6-0 in the semi-finals.

After a gap of almost 70 years, the sides met again at the 2001 FIFA U-20 World Cup, with Argentina recording another emphatic victory, winning 7-1.

Their first senior international meeting took place in a friendly match in Cairo in 2008, where Argentina secured a 2-0 victory through goals from Sergio Agüero and Nicolás Burdisso. Lionel Messi missed that match due to injury.

The two nations most recently faced each other at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games (held in 2021) in the men's under-23 tournament. Argentina won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Facundo Medina. Two other members of that Olympic squad—Alexis Mac Allister and Thiago Almada—are now expected to feature in Argentina's starting lineup for the 2026 World Cup Round of 16.

Overall, Argentina have won all seven meetings between the two nations across different age groups and senior competitions, while Egypt are yet to record a victory.

The Round of 16 encounter will offer Egypt an opportunity to end that long-standing winless run, while Argentina will be aiming to maintain their flawless record and book a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.
