TORONTO, Jun 18 (V7N) – Ghana began their FIFA World Cup campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama, securing all three points through a stoppage-time winner from Caleb Irenki at Toronto Stadium in Canada.

The decisive goal came in the fifth minute of added time when Brandon Thomas-Asante broke into the Panama penalty area with a burst of pace before delivering a precise pass to Irenki, who calmly tapped the ball into the net to spark celebrations among the Black Stars.

The victory marked Ghana's first-ever meeting with Panama in international competition and ensured a winning start for the African side in Group L.

Panama controlled much of the match, enjoying greater possession and launching more attacks throughout the contest. However, Ghana remained disciplined and dangerous on the counterattack under the guidance of experienced head coach Carlos Queiroz.

While Panama struggled to convert their dominance into goals, Ghana created several promising opportunities through quick transitions and direct attacking play. As the match appeared destined to end in a goalless draw, the Black Stars delivered the decisive breakthrough in the closing moments.

Thomas-Asante's penetrating run into the penalty area caught the Panamanian defense off guard before he unselfishly squared the ball for Irenki, who made no mistake from close range.

The victory places Ghana level on three points with England at the top of Group L. However, England occupy first place on goal difference following their 4-2 victory over Croatia.

Panama and Croatia remain without points and sit third and fourth in the standings respectively after the opening round of matches.

Ghana will look to build on their winning start when they face England in a highly anticipated Group L clash in their second match of the tournament.
