Guadalajara, Jun 12 (V7N) – Following hosts Mexico’s impressive victory in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Group A action continues at Guadalajara’s Estadio Chivas as Asian powerhouse South Korea take on European side Czech Republic in a crucial encounter.

Although neither team is considered among the tournament favorites, both nations view Group A as a realistic pathway to the knockout stage. Alongside Mexico and South Africa, the group presents an opportunity for either side to advance to the Round of 32.

The two teams have met only three times previously in international friendlies. South Korea and the Czech Republic have each won once, while the other match ended in a draw, setting the stage for what promises to be a closely contested battle.

For South Korea, much of the spotlight is on captain Son Heung-min, who is widely regarded as the face of Korean football. The 33-year-old forward, who has represented his country since 2010, is believed to be playing in his final FIFA World Cup, making this tournament especially significant for the veteran star.

The Czech Republic, meanwhile, returns to the World Cup stage for the first time since 2006. Back then, legendary midfielders Pavel Nedvěd and Tomáš Rosický led the team. This time, West Ham United midfielder Tomáš Souček carries the responsibility of guiding the Czech side in midfield.

Having failed to qualify for the previous four World Cups, the Czech Republic secured its place in the 2026 tournament through the UEFA playoffs, overcoming both Ireland and Denmark in dramatic penalty shootouts.

Head coach Miroslav Koubek has built a team known for its direct and physical style of play. The Czech attack frequently relies on crosses from the flanks, targeting towering forwards Tomáš Chorý and Patrik Schick, whose aerial dominance could pose a significant challenge to the South Korean defense.

With both teams eager to begin their World Cup campaign on a winning note, the match is expected to play a key role in shaping the outcome of Group A.
