PABNA, Sep 01 (V7N) — A Union Parishad chairman was seriously injured after 10 to 12 masked men allegedly attacked him with sharp weapons in Sujanagar upazila of Pabna on Sunday evening.
The victim, Amin Uddin, chairman of Bhayna Union Parishad, was attacked at around 6:30pm under Khairan Bridge in Gaznar Beel area of Manikhat Union.
Amin Uddin, son of the late Ahed Ali of Bhayna village, has been serving as the chairman of the Union Parishad for two consecutive terms.
According to his family and local residents, Amin Uddin was sitting under the bridge and chatting with another person when a group of 10 to 12 masked youths arrived on motorcycles.
The attackers allegedly launched a sudden assault on the chairman and repeatedly struck him with sharp weapons, leaving him seriously injured in different parts of his body.
Hearing his cries for help, local residents rushed to the scene, prompting the attackers to flee.
The locals rescued Amin Uddin and took him to Pabna General Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, doctors referred him to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
The motive behind the attack and the identities of those involved were not immediately known.
Local residents said Amin Uddin, despite serving as a Union Parishad chairman, led a simple life and was also involved in farming. They described him as an honest and modest person who was generally respectful towards others.
Residents said he regularly attended the Union Parishad office and provided services to local people. The attack has triggered anger and concern among the local community.
Additional Superintendent of Police of Sujanagar Circle Sadik Ahmed said the immediate priority was to ensure that the injured chairman received proper treatment.
"We are currently engaged in an urgent operation. Once the operation is over, we will gather information about the incident and take necessary legal action," he said.
