Dhaka, Dec 12 (V7N) – The latest update on the health of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia has been provided by Evercare Hospital authorities, confirming that she remains under intensive observation. The medical board managing her care has requested the public to avoid speculation or unverified reports regarding her condition.
According to a statement issued on Thursday, signed by Professor Dr. Shahabuddin Talukder on behalf of the medical board, the 79-year-old former Prime Minister has long suffered from multiple chronic and complex health issues, including liver complications, kidney dysfunction, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, and infection-related conditions.
Khaleda Zia began experiencing shortness of breath, cough, fever, and general weakness while at her residence. As her condition worsened, she was admitted to Evercare Hospital on November 23. Subsequent examinations revealed rapid deterioration in her lungs, heart, and kidneys, prompting her transfer from a regular cabin to the Critical Care Unit (CCU) for advanced treatment and intensive monitoring.
Recent tests have shown significant complications, including reduced oxygen levels and elevated carbon dioxide in her blood. She has been receiving treatment via high-flow nasal cannula and BiPAP machines, and later was placed on elective ventilator support to allow her organs to rest.
On November 27, she was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis, which continues to require intensive care. Severe bacterial and fungal infections have necessitated advanced antibiotic and antifungal therapy. Due to kidney failure, regular dialysis is ongoing.
She has also required multiple blood and blood component transfusions because of gastrointestinal bleeding and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Persistent fever and aortic valve infection detected via transesophageal echocardiography are being treated according to international medical guidelines with advice from a multidisciplinary team of domestic and foreign specialists.
The medical board, comprising both local and international experts, continues to monitor her condition closely and provide intensive care. The hospital has requested the public to respect her privacy and maintain confidence in the medical team’s professionalism. The board and her family have appealed to everyone to pray for her recovery.
