Dhaka, Nov 18 (V7N) – BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed has criticized the recently announced national consensus initiative, saying it has produced political division rather than unity. He argued that national sovereignty cannot be reshaped through administrative orders, as the country’s highest sovereign authority remains the Jatiya Sangsad, which is formed through direct voting by the people. According to him, citizens are eager to exercise their voting rights, and the next election must reflect their will.
He made the remarks on Monday while addressing a seminar titled “Transforming the Future of Education in Bangladesh: A Strategic Roadmap,” organized by the Dhaka University White Panel. The event was held at the university’s Senate Building, chaired by the panel’s convener, Professor Dr. Morshed Hasan Khan, with joint convener Professor Dr. Abdus Salam moderating.
Commenting on the July Charter and its referendum-related provisions, Salahuddin said the questions proposed in the charter are so complex that even PhD scholars would require considerable time to interpret them. He added that administrative orders of this nature have no historical precedent or constitutional legitimacy in Bangladesh, and he alleged that the initiative aims to create a “legal chaos” to influence political processes.
Professor Shah Shamim Ahmed of Dhaka University’s Institute of Education and Research presented the keynote paper at the seminar. The session was also attended by seminar committee convener Professor M.A. Qausar, member secretary Professor Dr. Mohiuddin, Stamford University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Akhtar Hossain Khan, and Dhaka University Faculty of Arts Dean Professor Dr. Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan, among others.
