Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has expressed gratitude to the Almighty following the Appellate Division’s verdict restoring the party’s registration, in a statement issued on Sunday.

He said: “On June 1 (Sunday), the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court restored Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration through a unanimous verdict. Alhamdulillah, after over a decade of legal battle, the party has regained its rightful status. This verdict ends a long chapter of injustice, and we welcome the ruling with satisfaction.”

Dr Shafiq said Jamaat-e-Islami had participated in national elections under the “scales” symbol both before and after the introduction of the Political Party Registration Rules, 2008.

On November 4, 2008, the party was officially registered with the Election Commission.

However, on January 25, 2009, a writ was filed in the High Court seeking cancellation of the party’s registration. The court delivered a split verdict on August 1, 2013, cancelling the registration, which was then challenged in the Appellate Division.

On Sunday, the Appellate Division accepted the appeal and ordered the restoration of Jamaat’s registration.

Dr Shafiq thanked all lawyers, supporters, and well-wishers who stood by the party during the long legal process.

He concluded: “This verdict is a triumph of justice and will help uphold the people’s voting rights. We hope it will bring a new chapter in Bangladesh’s political future, Insha’Allah.”
