Dhaka, May 30 (V7N) – Today marks the 44th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, the former President of Bangladesh, sector commander in the Liberation War, and proclaimer of the country’s independence.
Ziaur Rahman was tragically assassinated on this day in 1981 by a group of rebel army officers at the Chittagong Circuit House, a killing that sent shockwaves through the nation and altered the course of Bangladesh’s political history.
Born on January 19, 1936, in Bagmara village of Gabtoli upazila in Bogura, Ziaur Rahman rose to prominence during the 1971 Liberation War, where he served as a sector commander and led the Z Force, the first regular armed force unit formed in the war.
Following the Nov 7, 1975 Sepoy-People’s Revolution, he came to power and later founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on September 1, 1978, which remains one of the country’s major political parties.
To commemorate the occasion, the BNP and its affiliated organizations have organized a nine-day series of events, from May 25 to June 2, including discussion meetings, prayers, and food distribution to honor the late leader’s memory and contributions.
BNP leaders, party members, and supporters across the country are observing the day with solemn respect, remembering Ziaur Rahman as a war hero, statesman, and architect of nationalist politics in Bangladesh.
