Dhaka, Oct 11 (V7N) – A special lecture titled "The Two-State Solution at a Crossroads: What Future for Palestine?" was held today at the Department of International Relations, University of Dhaka (DU).

The lecture was delivered by Prof Dr Sanaa Alsarghali, UNESCO Chair of An-Najah National University, Palestine. Prof Dr A S M Ali Ashraf, Chairman of the Department of International Relations, presided over the academic session.

During her address, Prof Dr Alsarghali noted that a viable path for Palestine existed in September 2025. She highlighted that prior to this, justice and rights advisors consistently addressed the situation as an illegal occupation, motivating nations committed to international law to champion the New York Declaration.

Spearheaded internationally by France and Sweden, the declaration aimed to jump-start the two-state solution, resolve the ongoing crisis in Palestine, and pave the way for the recognition of a livable and democratic Palestinian state.

"One of the conditions for this Palestinian state to be livable is something very much outside the hands of the Palestinians. But for this state to be democratic, they asked the Palestinian Authority to carry out various reforms—some executed by Palestinian hands, and others imposed," Prof Alsarghali added.

Emphasising the changing geopolitical landscape, she mentioned, "You have to speak to the new realities of the world. You are talking about a state that could be recognized, even if this state remains under occupation."

The two-state solution—envisioning an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel—has long been the cornerstone of international diplomacy aimed at resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, the prospects for its implementation have grown increasingly uncertain amid continued Israeli settlement expansion, political divisions within Palestine, and shifting geopolitical dynamics. The lecture at Dhaka University is part of ongoing academic discussions on the future of Palestine and the challenges facing the two-state solution.
