Ukhiya, Oct 12 (V7N) – Police recovered the body of a four-year-old boy from a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, two days after he went missing. The 8th Armed Police Battalion (APBn) arrested a couple on suspicion of involvement in the abduction and murder.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Omair, son of Abdul Hamid, a resident of Block D-1 in Camp 15 (Jamtoli) in Ukhiya. The boy’s father alleged that the kidnappers had demanded Tk 50,000 in ransom.

According to police, Omair went missing on October 8. His family and the block head majhi subsequently informed the authorities, prompting members of the Jamtoli police camp to launch a search.

On October 9, Abdul Hamid alleged that Abdur Rahman had demanded Tk 50,000 for the boy’s release.

Acting on the complaint, police took Abdur Rahman into custody around noon on Saturday, October 10, with assistance from local Rohingya leaders and information obtained through technology-based investigation.

Police said Abdur Rahman admitted during questioning to abducting and killing the child. Acting on information he provided, officers recovered the boy’s body at around 10:30pm on Saturday from inside a tin-fenced area beside a rubbish tank near Abdur Rahman’s residence in Block D/13 of the camp. The body was found stuffed inside a sack.

Police initially suspect that the child was strangled before his body was concealed. Investigators are working to establish the motive and determine the full circumstances of the killing.

Inspector Tarek Mohammad Abdul Hannan of Jamtoli Police Camp-15 said Ukhiya police prepared an inquest report and sent the body to the morgue for an autopsy.

He confirmed that Abdur Rahman and his wife, Ansar Begum, had been arrested in connection with the case. Legal proceedings were underway, he said.

Riaz Uddin Ahmed, commander of the 8th APBn, said the arrests and recovery of the body were made with the assistance of local residents and through information gathered during the investigation. He said the incident was being investigated with due importance.
