SUJANAGAR, Pabna, July 16, (V7N) – Leaders and activists of the banned Awami League have been accused of attacking police following an announcement made through a mosque's microphone in Sujanagar upazila, Pabna, leaving Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muzaffar Hossain and Constable Sabuj Hossain injured.
The incident occurred at around 4:30 am on Thursday in the Doppara area of Mathurapur, according to police and local sources.
Pabna Police Superintendent Md. Sufi Ullah confirmed the incident and said the injured officers have received first aid.
According to police sources, the attack followed a World Cup football match that had kept residents of Mathurapur awake until early morning. Police had received secret intelligence that leaders and activists led by Abdul Wahab, president of the banned Awami League's Sujanagar Upazila branch, were planning to use the opportunity to carry out sabotage in the area.
A police patrol team proceeded to the Doppara area in two vehicles. Police claim that upon seeing the officers, an announcement was made from a local mosque's microphone, following which hundreds of party leaders and activists, along with supporters, armed with country-made weapons, attacked the police. Two police vehicles were vandalised, and two officers—including the OC—were injured. Police allege the attack was carried out under the leadership of Abdul Wahab.
However, Abdul Wahab, president of the banned Sujanagar Upazila Awami League, rejected the allegations as completely false and baseless. Claiming he was unable to go to the area himself due to police operations, he said local youths had gathered after watching the match and were cooking khichuri when police arrived and detained 10–15 people. He claimed local residents and women came out of their houses and rescued them, and that during the scuffle, a police vehicle was damaged and two policemen were injured.
Pabna Police Superintendent Md. Sufi Ullah said the process of taking legal action against those involved in the incident is underway.
