Dhaka, Jul 10 (V7N)- Continuous monsoon rainfall and recent flash floods in northern Bangladesh have disrupted the supply of fresh produce, driving up prices of vegetables and fish in markets across the capital.
A visit to several kitchen markets, including Notun Bazar and Mohakhali, found that the prices of most vegetables have increased by Tk 10 to Tk 20 per kilogram over the past week due to reduced supply.
Vegetables such as pointed gourd (potol), sponge gourd and green papaya are selling at around Tk 60 per kg, while bitter gourd, eggplant (brinjal) and cucumber are priced between Tk 80 and Tk 100 per kg.
The price of tomatoes has surged to Tk 250–280 per kg, while coriander leaves have risen by as much as Tk 100 per kg. Green chilies have also recorded a sharp increase in price.
Consumers, particularly those from low- and middle-income households, said they are struggling to cope with the rising cost of daily essentials.
Traders attributed the price hike to persistent rainfall, which has hampered vegetable harvesting and transportation from farming areas, reducing supplies in wholesale and retail markets.
They also said customer turnout has remained low because of the adverse weather, resulting in sluggish trading despite higher prices.
The fish market has also seen fresh price increases, with the cost of large freshwater fish rising by Tk 50 to Tk 100 per kg over the past week, reportedly due to lower supplies.
Pabda and Tangra are selling for around Tk 700 per kg, while Rui and Katla are priced at approximately Tk 400 per kg.
There has been little relief in the poultry market as well. Broiler chicken is selling for around Tk 190 per kg, while the price of Sonali chicken has remained stable. Native (deshi) chicken is being sold at around Tk 750 per kg.
In contrast, the egg market remains relatively stable, with a dozen eggs selling for Tk 115 to Tk 120, supported by an adequate supply.
Traders and consumers alike expressed hope that improved weather conditions in the coming days would help restore supply chains and stabilize prices.
