Cox's Bazar, July 16, (V7N) – Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has recovered 250,000 pieces of Yaba while it was being smuggled from Myanmar to Bangladesh through the Naf River near the border in Ukhiya. Three smugglers jumped into the river and fled towards Myanmar after sensing BGB presence, and no one was arrested in the incident.
The Ukhia Battalion (64 BGB) announced the information in a press release on Thursday, stating that based on secret intelligence, a special patrol team of Palangkhali BOP conducted a raid in the Katakhal border area at around 9:40 pm on Wednesday. At that time, three persons were seen entering Bangladesh from Myanmar with sacks in their hands, northeast of border pillar BRM-18 and about 10 yards from the zero line.
When BGB members challenged them, the smugglers abandoned the two sacks they were carrying, jumped into the Naf River, and swam to Myanmar. Later, a search at the spot recovered a total of 250,000 pieces of Yaba in 25 khaki-coloured blue airtight packets inside the two sacks. The estimated market value of the recovered Yaba is around Taka 75 million.
Ukhia Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Zahirul Islam confirmed the recovery and said intelligence surveillance has been further strengthened to identify and arrest those involved in drug trafficking. He added that BGB operations to prevent drug smuggling at the border are being conducted regularly and will continue in the future.
