Habiganj, Nov 23 (V7N) – Senior BNP leader Shammi Akter is facing strong criticism from party members after repeatedly making public statements and posting insinuating remarks on social media following her failure to secure the party nomination for the Habiganj-4 (Madhabpur–Chunarughat) constituency. Her continuous expressions of anger — from Facebook posts to television talk shows — have triggered widespread discomfort and resentment within the party.
According to BNP insiders, disappointment over being denied a nomination is understandable, but such concerns are expected to be communicated through organizational channels. They say Shammi Akter’s openly negative remarks are harming party unity, disrupting grassroots campaign efforts, and potentially influencing voter sentiment in a negative way. Many leaders consider her behavior a clear violation of party discipline.
Party sources confirmed that Shammi Akter had sought nomination for the Habiganj-4 seat in the upcoming election. However, after extensive evaluation, the BNP finalized its nomination for Syed Md. Faisal, former president of the Habiganj district BNP. Moments after the announcement, Shammi Akter expressed her frustration on Facebook, posting “Shame!” and the following day writing, “You traitor!” — comments widely interpreted by party activists as directed at the BNP’s top leadership.
She has also appeared on various talk shows where she strongly criticized the party’s decision, creating what many describe as an embarrassing situation for the BNP at the national level. Leaders say her remarks are sending the wrong message to supporters and raising doubts among general voters.
Shamsul Islam Kamal, President of Madhabpur Upazila BNP, said the party expects all members to accept its decisions. “But the way Shammi Akter is speaking publicly, it sounds as if she is campaigning against the party. This is completely unacceptable. Support for the paddy-sheaf symbol is growing across the constituency. Negative comments at this time are damaging our campaign. Those harming the party must be reined in immediately.”
Hamidur Rahman Hamdu, General Secretary of Madhabpur Upazila BNP, echoed similar concerns. “Her comments clearly target the party’s top leadership. This is misleading the activists and creating confusion. If we want to protect the party, immediate organizational action must be taken against her. Delaying such action could lead to more serious consequences.”
Party officials say the matter is under review, and disciplinary measures may soon be considered to preserve unity ahead of the election.
