Rajshahi, June 15 (V7N) – Rajshahi Central Jail is embarking on a path towards self-sufficiency with the launch of a new fish farming initiative aimed at boosting government income and reducing prison expenditures. Additional Inspector General of Prisons Colonel Tanvir Hossain inaugurated the program by releasing fry into two ponds within the jail premises on Saturday afternoon, following a visit to the Rajshahi Central Jail and Prison Training Academy.
Various species of fish, including Rui, Katal, Mrigel, Silver Carp, and Pangas, were released into the ponds. Colonel Tanvir Hossain was accompanied by Rajshahi Division Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Mr. Kamal Hossain, Rajshahi Central Jail Senior Jail Superintendent Md. Shah Alam Khan, and other officials from the Prisons Department.
After releasing the fish, Colonel Tanvir Hossain emphasized the dual benefits of the project. "We are creating a new source of income for the government by ensuring proper use of local resources," he stated. "The fish produced in this pond will be used as food for the prisoners, which will help save the government's expenses and make the prison self-sufficient in food."
He further added that prisons are evolving beyond mere places of punishment to become centers of correction. "Here, prisoners are receiving training through productive activities, which will play a helpful role in their social rehabilitation," he noted.
Rajshahi Division DIG Prisons Mr. Kamal Hossain echoed this sentiment, highlighting broader efforts to modernize and self-reliant prison management. "We have undertaken various programs to make the prison management modern and self-reliant. Various agricultural activities including fish farming, tree plantation and training programs are part of this," he said.
During his visit, Colonel Tanvir Hossain also planted a litchi tree and engaged with both prisoners and officials. He expressed satisfaction with the overall environment, security, and ongoing development activities within the prison.
Officials involved believe that this initiative by the prison administration will not only foster positive changes in the lives of prisoners but also contribute significantly to reducing government expenditure.
