Dhaka, Nov 04 (V7N)- Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said on Tuesday that it is not yet confirmed whether weapons were stolen from the Dhaka airport cargo village during the recent fire. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
He made the remarks during a briefing following a core committee meeting at the Secretariat. The advisor said that the meeting also discussed minor incidents that occurred in a few areas after a political party announced its candidates for the upcoming elections.
Regarding the police commission, Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said the issue was not discussed at the meeting, but he expressed hope that it would be finalized soon. Details about the commission’s facilities will be revealed after its formation.
On the weapons issue, he said a special investigation committee has been formed, headed by the senior secretary, who has already written to several countries for assistance. Experts from one or two countries have arrived to aid the probe. “It will only be known after the investigation whether weapons were actually stolen,” he said. He added that if theft is confirmed, those responsible will be held accountable under the law. The total number of weapons involved, if any, is yet to be confirmed.
Regarding the army’s role in the elections, the Home Affairs Advisor said that the army still retains magisterial powers, which remain in effect.
On the appointment of Officers-in-Charge (OCs) for the upcoming polls, he explained that authorities are reviewing past records. “We will first see who worked in the last three elections and exclude them. Then we will check who served in two elections, and later one election. It is not possible to appoint a new OC at this moment,” he said.
