Teknaf, Dec 28 (V7N) — A fire broke out at Rohingya camps in Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar district, leaving over a hundred makeshift huts completely gutted. Fire Service personnel, along with camp authorities and local volunteers, have been working relentlessly to bring the blaze under control.
The incident occurred around 10:30 pm on Sunday at Rohingya camps No. 24 and 25 in the Leda and Ali Khali areas of Teknaf. The fire spread rapidly due to the highly flammable materials used in the shelters, causing extensive damage within a short time.
Mohammad Alam, President of the Leda Development Management Committee, said that preliminary information suggests the fire originated from a mobile phone charger inside the house of a camp resident named Fatema. “The fire spread quickly in all directions. We rushed to the spot and are continuing efforts to extinguish the flames. Fire Service units are also actively working at the scene,” he said.
Syed Alam, a resident of the Leda Rohingya camp, said the fire broke out suddenly in his camp. “Fire Service teams arrived and began their operations. Alongside them, we are trying to control the fire with the help of local people. However, more than 25 to 30 houses have already been burned, and the fire has not yet been fully extinguished,” he added.
Another camp resident, Nur Akam Md. Alam, said that a fire erupted in one of the makeshift huts, prompting everyone to work together to contain it. “The intensity of the fire is very high. The exact cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed,” he said.
Additional Deputy Inspector General Muhammad Kawsar Sikder, Commander of the 16 Armed Police Battalion (APBn), confirmed that the fire occurred in the area between the Ali Khali and Leda Rohingya camps. “All concerned agencies are jointly working to control the fire. Further details will be shared once the situation is fully assessed,” he said.
Authorities said damage assessment is underway, and further information will be provided after the fire is brought under complete control.
