Rajshahi, Dec 11 (V7N) – A two-year-old boy, Sajid, remains missing after falling into an abandoned deep tube well nearly 35 feet deep in Tanore Upazila, Rajshahi. Despite multiple attempts to locate him using cameras, no trace of the child has been found.
Fire service personnel first lowered a camera into the well on Wednesday afternoon, but visibility was severely reduced due to collapsed soil and hay inside the hole, preventing them from spotting the child. A second camera attempt around 10 p.m. yielded the same result.
Sajid’s mother, Runa Khatun, said she was walking to a nearby field with her two children around 1 p.m. When she heard her son calling “mother” and turned around, Sajid had disappeared, trapped in the concealed hole beneath the hay. His calls gradually weakened and eventually stopped completely.
The incident quickly drew a large crowd, complicating the rescue efforts, authorities said. Ambulances and life-saving equipment were stationed nearby as three units from the fire service worked tirelessly to rescue the child. Oxygen and light are being supplied into the well to help sustain him.
Local sources said that about a year ago, the landowner, Kachir Uddin, had dug the semi-deep tube well for irrigation, but abandoned it after failing to find water, leaving the dangerous hole exposed. It was during this time that Sajid accidentally fell in while playing in the field. Initial attempts by locals to rescue him were unsuccessful, prompting a call to the fire service.
Units from Tanore, Rajshahi Sadar, and Chapainawabganj quickly arrived at the scene and initiated the rescue operation. Pipes were inserted into the well to provide oxygen in an effort to keep the child alive.
Assistant Director of the Rajshahi Fire Service, Didarul Islam, said at 11 p.m., “The rescue operation is ongoing. Despite using cameras, the child has not yet been located. We are attempting to rescue him intact, but we cannot confirm whether he is still alive. We hope to retrieve him within two to three hours.”
Tanore Upazila Nirbahi Officer Naima Khan stated that both the fire service and law enforcement are engaged in the rescue efforts. “We are praying that the child is safely returned to his mother,” she added.
