Kyiv, 16 Jul (V7N)- Protests have erupted in several cities across Ukraine following the dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, with demonstrators demanding his reinstatement, according to a report by the BBC on Thursday (July 16).
The largest demonstrations took place in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, where many young protesters gathered carrying banners that read “Power to Fedorov” and “Stop destroying the victory.” Demonstrators also chanted slogans expressing anger over the decision.
The dismissal has triggered criticism among parts of Ukraine’s military and civil society, as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has not yet provided a detailed explanation for removing Fedorov from the defense ministry.
Fedorov, 35, was appointed defense minister in January and gained recognition for efforts to modernize the ministry, strengthen anti-corruption measures, and introduce data-driven methods to improve military performance and management.
Some analysts and observers in Ukraine believe his removal may be linked to disagreements between Fedorov and more traditional military leadership, including Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi.
Others have pointed to criticism that Fedorov had not moved quickly enough in implementing reforms related to military mobilization.
The controversy has added further political pressure on the Ukrainian government at a time when the country continues to face major security challenges.
