Sucre, May 26 (V7N)- Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz has announced that he and his cabinet will reduce their salaries by 50 percent in response to ongoing nationwide protests and economic unrest.
Speaking in the constitutional capital Sucre on Monday (May 25), the president said the decision was taken amid growing political pressure, road blockades, and calls for his resignation.
The protests, now entering their fourth week, have significantly disrupted supply chains in major cities including La Paz and El Alto, leading to shortages of food, fuel, and essential medicines. Markets, hospitals, and petrol stations have all reported operational strain.
Demonstrators are demanding that the government reverse its austerity measures, increase wages, and reinstate fuel subsidies that had been introduced to maintain lower fuel prices since 2006.
Critics accuse the centre-right administration of favoring business elites and lacking representation from indigenous and working-class communities, a departure from previous governments.
In response, President Paz has defended his economic policy, arguing that spending cuts and subsidy reductions are necessary to stabilize the country’s economy during the ongoing crisis.
