Baghdad, May 02 (V7N)- Iraq’s ruling Shiite alliance has nominated Ali al-Zaidi as the country’s new prime minister, according to a report by the Al Jazeera on Saturday.

Al-Zaidi, described as a relatively new figure in Iraqi politics, will now have 30 days to form a government at a time when the country is facing severe economic and security challenges.

The nomination comes after months of political deadlock that had delayed the formation of a stable government amid internal divisions and external influence.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi welcomed the decision, congratulating al-Zaidi and stating that Iran respects Iraq’s constitutional process for appointing a prime minister. He also emphasized Tehran’s commitment to Iraq’s sovereignty and called for stronger bilateral cooperation.

Separately, US President Donald Trump also expressed support for the nomination. Washington had earlier warned that cooperation with Iraqi security forces could be reconsidered if Iran-backed groups gained greater influence in the government.

Analysts say al-Zaidi now faces the difficult task of forming a functioning administration amid Iraq’s ongoing political instability, economic pressure, and competing regional influences.
