Dhaka, Nov 25 (V7N) – Ethiopia’s Haile Gubbi volcano has erupted for the first time in 12,000 years, triggering widespread flight disruptions across major air routes between India and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, the Khaleej Times reported.

The unexpected eruption began on Sunday morning local time in northern Ethiopia. A massive ash cloud spread over the Red Sea, severely affecting international air corridors used by airlines operating between Indian cities and destinations such as Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Air India and IndiGo have confirmed cancellations of several flights as authorities reassess safety conditions for passengers and crew. Air India said flights were halted after “precautionary checks” on aircraft operating through the affected airspace.

As of Monday, Air India flights AI-22204 to Hyderabad and AI-2212 to Chennai via Dubai have been canceled due to the ongoing situation.

Aviation experts warn that volcanic ash poses serious risks to aircraft engines and visibility, prompting rerouting and cancellations until conditions improve. Further disruptions may occur if ash concentration remains high over key air corridors.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as airlines adjust flight operations to ensure safety.
