Michigan, Sept 29 (V7N) — At least one person was killed and nine others injured after a gunman opened fire and set fire inside a Mormon church in Grand Blanc, Michigan, on Sunday morning, according to local police reports cited by the BBC.

The attack took place at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located about 96 kilometers northwest of Detroit. Grand Blanc Township Police confirmed that the suspect was disarmed at the scene. However, authorities have not yet released the attacker’s identity or possible motive. Police added that the fire inside the church was quickly extinguished and the situation has been brought under control, with no further threat to the public.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi described the incident on social media platform X as a “horrific shooting and fire.” She confirmed that FBI agents and members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) were heading to the scene. “Violence in a house of worship is heartbreaking and chilling. Please keep the victims of this terrible tragedy in your prayers,” Bondi said.

FBI Director Kash Patel called the attack “cowardly and criminal,” stating that federal agents were working closely with local law enforcement. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer also expressed outrage, saying, “Violence is unacceptable anywhere, especially in places of worship. We are closely monitoring the situation.”

The incident has left the Grand Blanc community shaken, with residents struggling to comprehend such bloodshed in a place that is meant to symbolize peace and sanctuary.
