Mexico City, July 2 (V7N) – Three people died during celebrations in Mexico City after co-hosts Mexico secured a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, local authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

The victims reportedly died from asphyxiation during large-scale celebrations near Paseo de la Reforma, one of the capital's main thoroughfares, where thousands of fans had gathered to celebrate Mexico's 2-0 victory over Ecuador at Estadio Azteca.

The win marked Mexico's first World Cup knockout-stage victory in four decades, prompting jubilant scenes across the capital before the celebrations turned tragic.

Local health officials identified the victims as a 44-year-old man and two women aged 19 and 48. All three died from asphyxiation, according to the authorities.

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada Molina said in a post on X that emergency services responded immediately after receiving reports that three people had collapsed at different locations near Paseo de la Reforma.

"According to the city's health authorities, emergency teams responded immediately after reports that three people had collapsed near Paseo de la Reforma," she wrote.

"Despite all medical efforts, they could not be saved," the mayor added.

Brugada also expressed her condolences to the victims' families and urged the public to celebrate responsibly.

Mexico's victory over Ecuador was the country's first World Cup knockout-stage win since defeating Bulgaria on home soil at the 1986 FIFA World Cup.
