Dhaka, Aug 16 (V7N)- The Election Commission (EC) has declared the nomination papers of BNP presidential candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir valid.
Election officer and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin scrutinized the nomination papers at the EC building on Sunday (August 16) afternoon. The papers were approved after no discrepancies were found during the scrutiny.
Earlier, the EC also declared the nomination papers of Col. (retd.) Oli Ahmed Bir Bikram, the presidential candidate of the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami, valid.
With both candidates' nominations approved, the country's 23rd presidential election is set to be contested between Mirza Fakhrul and Oli Ahmed.
According to the election schedule, the presidential election will be held on August 20. The deadline for withdrawing candidacies is 4 pm on August 18.
Since the BNP has a two-thirds majority in parliament, Mirza Fakhrul is widely expected to have the advantage in the presidential contest.
