Darwin, Aug 16 (V7N)- Bangladesh have created history by defeating Australia by nine wickets in the Darwin Test, securing their first Test victory on Australian soil in 23 years.

The historic win gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the two-match series, with one Test still to play.

Few could have predicted such a result when the match began. Before the Test, Bangladesh captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto had said he wanted his team to play good cricket for five days and approach the match session by session. Instead, Bangladesh wrapped up the contest with a day still remaining.

Australia began the fourth day with Alex Carey and Cameron Green at the crease, holding a 67-run lead. Bangladesh missed an early opportunity when Litton Das failed to hold a catch behind the wicket off Hasan Mahmud's bowling.

Carey could not make the most of the reprieve, however. Mehedi Hasan Miraz dismissed him for 30, before bowling Beau Webster for 5.

Miraz then struck again to remove captain Pat Cummins for 8, putting Australia under further pressure.

Cameron Green provided Australia's biggest resistance, scoring the third century of his career. But Hasan Mahmud eventually ended his innings as Bangladesh's bowlers completed the job.

Australia were eventually dismissed for 284, leaving Bangladesh with a target of just 57 runs.

The chase suffered an early setback when first-innings centurion Tanjid Hasan Tamim was dismissed. But Bangladesh remained composed, and Mominul Haque sealed the historic victory with a boundary off Webster in the 14th over.

Bangladesh had earlier scored 426 in their first innings after dismissing Australia for 198, taking a 228-run first-innings lead.

Miraz was one of the key architects of the victory, claiming five wickets in Australia's second innings and maintaining remarkable control throughout the match.

After the game, Miraz described the victory as a proud moment and thanked the Bangladeshi supporters who travelled to Australia.

The result marks one of the most significant Test victories in Bangladesh's cricket history and ends a 23-year wait for a Test win on Australian soil.
