Houston, Jun 14 (V7N) – Four-time world champions Germany are set to face debutants Curaçao in a highly anticipated FIFA World Cup Group E encounter on Sunday night, in a match that pits one of football’s traditional powerhouses against its newest underdog story.

Ranked 10th in the FIFA rankings, Germany enter the match as overwhelming favorites against Curaçao, who sit 82nd and are making their first-ever World Cup appearance. Despite the gap in reputation and resources, the fixture has drawn attention as a classic “David vs Goliath” encounter.

Curaçao, a Caribbean nation with a population of around 150,000 and an area of just 444 square kilometers, has already made history by qualifying for the tournament. However, their recent form has been inconsistent, with just one win in their last five matches.

Germany, meanwhile, arrive in strong form under coach Julian Nagelsmann, having won all of their last five friendlies while scoring 18 goals. The team is viewed as part of a new attacking generation aimed at restoring Germany’s global dominance after disappointing World Cup campaigns in 2018 and 2022.

Midfielder Leon Goretzka acknowledged the pressure on the squad, saying the team is still working to rebuild trust with supporters after recent failures, while emphasizing unity and determination to improve.

Germany’s attack is built around rising stars Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz, both central to Nagelsmann’s high-tempo, possession-based system that has drawn comparisons to Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning side.

On the other side, Curaçao bring experience and ambition despite their underdog status. Veteran coach Dick Advocaat, one of the most experienced managers in international football, leads a squad blending European-based players with island talent.

Midfielder Livano Comenencia said the team believes anything is possible once the match begins, stressing that football is played “11 vs 11” regardless of reputation. Former Manchester United academy player Tahith Chong also highlighted the excitement across the island, calling the World Cup qualification a historic moment for Curaçao.

Germany are expected to field a strong lineup featuring Manuel Neuer, Joshua Kimmich, Jonathan Tah, Nico Schlotterbeck, David Raum, Leon Goretzka, Aleksandar Pavlović, Leroy Sané, Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, and Kai Havertz. Curaçao’s expected XI includes Eloy Room, Juninho Bacuna, Leandro Bacuna, Armando Obispo, and Tahith Chong among others.

Kick-off is set for 11 pm Bangladesh time in Houston, with Germany aiming to assert dominance while Curaçao look to deliver one of the tournament’s biggest surprises.
