COLOMBO, June 28 (V7N) — Sri Lanka wrapped up a dominant performance against Bangladesh on Day 4 of the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club, sealing a comprehensive innings and 78-run victory to clinch the two-match series 1-0. The first Test in Galle had ended in a draw.

Resuming on 115-6, Bangladesh's hopes of extending the match were quickly dashed as the visitors lost their final four wickets in just 34 balls, folding for 133 in their second innings. Liton Das, the last recognised batter, fell early for 14, edging a vicious delivery from Prabath Jayasuriya.

Jayasuriya continued to torment Bangladesh, removing Nayeem Hasan and Taijul Islam in quick succession, before Tharindu Rathnayake trapped Ebadot Hossain lbw to bring a swift end to the contest. Ebadot’s unsuccessful review only served to delay Sri Lanka’s inevitable celebrations.

The match was effectively lost for Bangladesh after they were dismissed for 247 in the first innings on a flat surface, with Shadman Islam’s 46 the top score in an otherwise lacklustre batting effort. In response, Sri Lanka amassed a commanding 458, led by Pathum Nissanka’s 158, Dinesh Chandimal’s 93, and a brisk 84 from Kusal Mendis.

Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam tried valiantly for Bangladesh, taking 5-131, supported by Nayeem’s 3-87, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a massive 211-run first-innings lead for Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh’s second innings offered little resistance. Only Mushfiqur Rahim (26) managed to reach double digits among the top seven batters. The defeat extended Bangladesh’s poor away record in Tests and exposed deeper issues within their batting unit.
