Dhaka, May 03 (V7N) — World Press Freedom Day is being observed today (Sunday) in Bangladesh and across the globe, emphasizing the importance of free, independent, and responsible journalism.

This year’s theme, “Shaping a Peaceful Future: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security,” highlights the critical role of media freedom in ensuring democratic values and sustainable development.

In Bangladesh, the day is being marked through various programs organized by journalists and media organizations, aiming to uphold professional rights, dignity, and freedom of the press. Discussions, rallies, and other events are being held to reinforce the importance of a free media environment.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has organized a rally to mark the occasion. The rally is scheduled to begin at 9:00 am from the Officers’ Club premises and conclude at the Information Building Complex.

World Press Freedom Day was officially proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, following a recommendation made at UNESCO’s 26th General Conference in 1991. Since then, the day has been observed annually on May 3 to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, assess media independence worldwide, and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

As part of the observance, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has released its annual Global Press Freedom Index. According to the latest report, Bangladesh has dropped three positions, ranking 152nd out of 180 countries this year, compared to 149th in the previous year.

The day serves as a reminder of the essential role of journalism in promoting transparency, accountability, and human rights, while also honoring the sacrifices made by media professionals worldwide.
