Washington, Aug 03 (V7N) – US President Donald Trump has said that an agreement between the United States and Iran is close, announcing that indirect talks between the two countries are set to begin on Monday following the cancellation of a planned military operation.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday (August 2), Trump said progress had been made toward easing tensions in the region and claimed that an understanding had been reached regarding the Strait of Hormuz. He also expressed optimism that negotiations would lead to an agreement on Iran's nuclear disarmament.
Trump said a previously planned military operation against Iran had been canceled at the request of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. According to the US president, the three countries urged Washington to pursue diplomacy instead of military action.
Meanwhile, Al Jazeera reported that mediators are prepared to travel to Tehran to facilitate the next phase of indirect discussions between the United States and Iran.
The expected talks come amid continued regional and international efforts to reduce tensions and revive diplomatic engagement over Iran's nuclear program and broader security issues in the Middle East.
