Aug 02 (v7n) - Ukrainian attacks on several Russian regions on Sunday left at least eight people dead, Russian officials have reported, with some strikes landing hundreds of kilometres from the front line.
Both Moscow and Kyiv have intensified cross-border attacks in recent months, while US-led peace talks remain largely stalled. Kyiv, which denies targeting civilians, says the strikes are legitimate retaliation for Russian bombardment of Ukrainian territory and are intended to pressure Moscow into negotiations.
In the Belgorod region bordering Ukraine, shelling killed three people, while a drone attack on the Saratov region near Kazakhstan claimed two more lives, according to regional authorities. In a separate incident, three people were killed when a drone struck a car in the Udmurtia region—more than 1,000 kilometres from the frontline. Acting governor Olga Abramova called the attack "monstrous in its senselessness," stating that the victims were "definitely not a military target." The Russian defence ministry also reported that air defence systems intercepted 635 Ukrainian drones overnight.
