Washington, Aug. 2 (V7N) – U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has claimed that Iran is now more interested in negotiations following recent American military strikes, saying Tehran is willing to discuss not only its nuclear programme but also the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Rubio made the remarks in an interview with Fox News, according to a report by Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera on Sunday (Aug. 2).
The U.S. secretary of state claimed that recent American attacks had destroyed significant portions of Iran's naval and air capabilities, including missile defence systems, missile launch platforms and weapons production infrastructure.
He said the strikes had substantially weakened Iran's military capabilities.
However, Rubio acknowledged that Iran's military strength had not been completely eliminated, noting that the country still possesses missiles and drones capable of carrying out attacks.
Rubio further claimed that the defensive "shield" Iran had previously relied upon was no longer effective following the U.S. strikes.
According to him, the current situation has significantly narrowed Tehran's options, leaving negotiations as its most viable path forward.
Iranian authorities have not immediately responded to Rubio's remarks.
