PABNA, Aug 04 (V7N) — A man suspected of attempting to burglarise a grocery shop was beaten to death by local residents after allegedly attacking the shop owner and two of his sons with a sharp weapon in Bangladesh's Pabna district early Tuesday, police said.
The incident occurred at around 3:00 a.m. in Thandatala village of Mistripara, under Sahapur Union in Ishwardi upazila.
The deceased was identified as Manik Hossain, also known as Suman, 32, a resident of Azizoltola village in the same union.
According to the injured shop owner, Habibul Mondol, he heard noises coming from his grocery shop, which is located beside his home, and went outside to investigate. He alleged that he found the suspect inside the shop and attempted to stop him.
At that point, the suspect allegedly attacked Habibul with a Chinese-style axe, inflicting serious injuries to his hand and back. Hearing his cries for help, Habibul's two sons rushed to the scene, where they were also reportedly attacked and injured with the same weapon.
Local residents gathered after hearing the commotion, overpowered the suspect and assaulted him. He died at the scene from injuries sustained during the beating.
Habibul Mondol and his two sons were admitted to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately known.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Asadur Rahman of Ishwardi Police Station confirmed the incident.
Police recovered the body and sent it to Pabna General Hospital for an autopsy. Authorities said an investigation is underway and legal action will be taken based on the findings.
Mob violence resulting in death is a criminal offence under Bangladeshi law, regardless of the allegations against the deceased. Police have not yet announced whether any arrests have been made in connection with the fatal assault.
