Dhaka, Aug 03 (V7N) – Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday urged opposition parties to maintain democratic political practices, warning against rhetoric that could lead to confrontation and instability.

Speaking at a discussion held at the National Press Club to mark the second anniversary of the July Uprising, the minister drew parallels between the statements of current opposition leaders and remarks previously made by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

He said that in 1991, the Awami League had declared it would not allow the government to function peacefully, adding that some opposition leaders are now using similar language by saying they would not allow the current government to remain in office for five years.

Addressing political reforms, Mirza Fakhrul said there is a misconception that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) opposes the implementation of the July Charter. He claimed that the Consensus Commission had introduced a referendum proposal that was not mutually agreed upon and alleged that the nation had been misled on the issue.

The minister said the BNP has clearly identified the points on which it disagrees but remains committed to implementing every provision of the July Charter that has been signed.

He also said that while opposition parties have the democratic right to hold protests and demonstrations, such activities should not create conflict. He urged political parties to resolve differences through discussions in Parliament, including deciding whether the proposed body should function as a correction committee or a reform council.

Condemning recent incidents of attacks in different areas, the minister said law enforcement agencies would take action against those responsible in accordance with the law.

Speaking at the same programme, Information Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan said there were attempts to artificially shift politics away from Parliament. He said the BNP seeks the cooperation of all political parties to preserve democratic culture and strengthen parliamentary politics.

Swapan added that an effective Parliament and democratic political debate are essential to honouring the sacrifices made during the July Uprising.
