Damascus, July 28 (V7N) – Syria is preparing to hold its first national parliamentary elections since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad, marking a significant political transition in the war-torn country.

According to Mohammad Taha al-Ahmad, chairman of the Higher People's Assembly Electoral Committee, the elections will take place between September 15 and 20, state news agency SANA reported on Sunday.

Under the new political framework, President Ahmed al-Shara will appoint one-third of the 210 seats in parliament, while the remaining seats will be indirectly elected through a multi-tiered representative process.

Al-Ahmad confirmed that at least 20 percent of candidates and participants will be women, reflecting an emphasis on inclusive governance. He also stated that the entire electoral process will be held under international supervision, signaling Syria’s intention to demonstrate transparency and legitimacy to the global community.

This announcement comes at a pivotal moment for Syria, as it navigates post-conflict reconstruction and attempts to reestablish its political institutions under a new leadership.
