Dhaka, Aug 03 (V7N) – Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Monday said the government does not believe there is any immediate cause for alarm over recent security concerns, adding that law enforcement agencies remain on high alert across the country.
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Monday (August 3), the Home Minister said the banned Awami League no longer has the capacity to carry out acts of sabotage around August 5.
He also said there was no reason for public panic following the recovery of a suspicious bag, alleging that a political group was attempting to undermine communal harmony.
According to the minister, miscreants left a bag in Ashulia, which was later recovered by law enforcement agencies. He said an investigation is underway to determine whether the incident is linked to any broader security threat, adding that such incidents are far fewer than in previous years.
Salahuddin Ahmed said security agencies are actively working to prevent extremist activities and have strengthened surveillance across the country.
He added that police personnel have been instructed not to leave patrol vehicles unattended, ensuring that at least one officer remains with the vehicle while others take breaks, as part of enhanced security measures.
Responding to questions about former Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed, the Home Minister said the former police chief had been granted bail subject to certain conditions. He said the government has asked its appointed legal team to obtain a certified copy of the court order to review those conditions.
The minister further said the government has instructed its legal representatives to file a petition seeking cancellation of the bail at the earliest opportunity. He also claimed that authorities suspect Benazir Ahmed may hold passports from other countries and said efforts are underway to bring him back through diplomatic channels.
