Stockholm, June 11 (V7N) — Controversial environmental activist Greta Thunberg has returned to Sweden after being detained by Israeli authorities during a humanitarian mission to Gaza. She arrived at Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport on Tuesday evening (June 10) local time, where supporters greeted her with placards and slogans of solidarity.

Thunberg was first flown from Israel to France before making her way back to Sweden.

The incident stems from a humanitarian effort launched a week and a half ago when 12 international volunteers boarded the aid ship Madeleine, aiming to deliver supplies to Gaza. The Israeli military intercepted the vessel in international waters, detaining all those on board.

Out of the 12 detained, four—including Thunberg—have since chosen to return to their respective home countries. The remaining eight volunteers are reportedly still in Israeli custody.

Thunberg, known globally for her climate activism, had joined the Gaza-bound mission in solidarity with Palestinian civilians facing a humanitarian crisis. Her involvement sparked both support and criticism worldwide, further fueling debates about activism, international law, and the Gaza conflict.

Israeli authorities have yet to provide detailed updates on the legal proceedings or the status of the remaining detainees.
