BARGUNA, April 29 (V7N) — A farmer was killed and 15 students injured in separate lightning strikes during a Kalbaishakhi storm in Barguna district on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Md. Nur Jamal (54) of Puzakhola village in Amtali upazila. He was working in a field near his home when lightning struck, killing him instantly. The district administration provided Tk 25,000 in cash assistance to his family.
Around the same time, lightning struck a palm tree near Fuljhuri School and College, injuring 15 students. Eight were admitted to the Barguna 250‑bed General Hospital, while seven returned home after treatment. The hospitalized students include Karima, Jannati, Riya Moni, Maryam, Samira, Riyamoni (Grade VI), Yasmin, and Amena Akhter (Grade VII).
Teacher Md. Bashir Hossain said: “During class, lightning suddenly struck a palm tree next to the building, causing a loud noise and injuring the students.”
On instructions from Barguna‑1 MP Md. Oli Ullah, members of Islami Andolan Bangladesh visited the hospital to check on the injured. Amtali Upazila Executive Officer Muhammad Zafar Arif Chowdhury confirmed Nur Jamal’s death and the assistance provided. Deputy Commissioner Tajlima Akhter.
