DHAKA, May 28, (V7N) – The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast light to moderate rain or thunder showers in several divisions over the next 24 hours, accompanied by gusty winds and lightning.

According to the Met Office bulletin, rain is likely at a few places in Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram divisions, and at one or two places in Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions. Moderately heavy falls may occur in some areas. Day temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged, while night temperatures may rise slightly.

The sun will set at 6:41 pm today and rise at 5:11 am tomorrow in Dhaka.

Meanwhile, Dhaka ranked eighth among the world’s most polluted cities on Friday morning, recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 99 at 11:50 am, which falls under the ‘Moderate’ category.

Globally, cities with AQI scores of 156, 129, and 126 topped the pollution list. AQI values between 101–150 are considered ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups,’ 151–200 ‘unhealthy,’ 201–300 ‘very unhealthy,’ and above 301 ‘hazardous.’

Bangladesh calculates AQI based on five pollutants: PM10, PM2.5, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, and ozone. Dhaka’s air quality typically worsens in winter but improves during the monsoon season.

According to the World Health Organization, air pollution causes nearly seven million deaths globally each year, linked to stroke, heart disease, chronic respiratory illnesses, lung cancer, and acute respiratory infections.
