DHAKA, May 18, (V7N ) — Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin said that political parties must build understanding and cooperation to establish a lasting culture of free and acceptable elections, not just achieve a single successful poll.
Speaking at the inauguration of the new committee of the Reporters Forum for Election and Democracy (RFED) at the Election Training Institute in Agargaon today, he said political parties must first act responsibly to make local government elections violence-free and more participatory.
“The beauty of democracy lies not in one-sided praise or criticism of elections, but in giving importance to all perspectives,” the CEC said.
He maintained that the commission has not shown political bias in carrying out its duties. “The commission worked based on law, conscience, and accountability,” he said. “Our intention was to organize a free, fair, and credible election and ensure equal opportunities for all candidates.”
Nasir Uddin said the interim government has given the Election Commission full independence and cooperation. “There had been no interference from the government. Rather, the head of the government instructed the commission to work independently,” he added.
On local government elections, he noted that although polls are being held without party symbols, several political parties have already started announcing candidate nominations, raising fresh concerns.
Citing past experiences, he said local government elections often see violence and loss of life. The CEC urged political parties to hold talks and reach an understanding so the polls can be conducted properly.
He stressed the need for more training and awareness among political parties, voters, journalists, and other stakeholders.
Work is ongoing to amend the code of conduct and operational rules for local government elections, he said. The election schedule will be announced after completing these preparations and consulting with the government.
