Dhaka, Feb 17 (V7N) — Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, a Standing Committee member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has described the formation of the newly elected parliament as a “most joyful” development, saying it reflects the restoration of people’s voting rights and democratic accountability.
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters on Tuesday after taking oath as a member of parliament.
Khasru said the constitutional, political, and democratic rights of citizens are closely tied to the process of electing representatives, adding that the day marked a significant step toward strengthening democracy in Bangladesh.
“We have struggled for many years to ensure people’s ownership. Today is a happy day, and we believe we are moving toward that goal,” he said.
Emphasizing democratic principles, the BNP leader noted that the essence of democracy lies in ensuring freedom of expression, electing representatives, and holding them accountable. He called on all lawmakers to cooperate in upholding these values.
Referring to the ongoing discussions over different oath procedures, Khasru said parliament should function in accordance with the constitution, adding that decisions about who takes which oath remain a personal matter. However, he stressed that elected representatives have a responsibility to take oath and participate in parliamentary proceedings as a sign of respect to voters.
