Dhaka, Jan 13 (V7N)- NCP Convener Nahid Islam on Tuesday warned that voting “No” in the upcoming referendum would keep the previous political system intact and undermine the spirit of the July uprising.
He made the remarks while inaugurating a referendum awareness vehicle in front of the National Citizens Party (NCP) office at Bangla Motor in the capital on Tuesday afternoon.
Referring to BNP without naming it directly, Nahid Islam said, “A political party is campaigning for a ‘No’ vote in the referendum. If ‘No’ wins, the old system will remain and the July uprising will fail. Even if they do not vote for us, they must still vote ‘Yes’ for the future of the country.”
He said the referendum is crucial for long-term national reform and urged citizens to support it regardless of party affiliation.
NCP Election Management Committee Chief and former advisor Asif Mohammad Sajib Bhuiyan, along with other party leaders, were present at the event.
Party leaders informed that the newly launched vehicle aims to raise public awareness in favor of the referendum. More such vehicles will be added, which will travel across Dhaka and other parts of the country.
Nahid Islam further claimed that the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami would win the upcoming election, form the next government, and carry out fundamental reforms in the country.
He also criticized what he described as populist promises by rival parties, alleging that some groups are campaigning by promising various types of cards without clarifying funding sources. “Either taxes will be increased, or party workers will benefit. People cannot be deceived by cheap campaigns,” he said, drawing a comparison with past promises such as rice at Tk 10, which he said ultimately failed the public.
