Dhaka, July 26 (V7N)- Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the recently resigned President Md. Shahabuddin will receive constitutional benefits and privileges as a former head of state. He also said no criminal case can be filed against a President in any court for actions taken while serving in office.

The Home Minister made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists at a briefing at the Secretariat on Sunday (July 26) afternoon.

Salahuddin Ahmed said Md. Shahabuddin received government cooperation during his tenure and performed his constitutional responsibilities during the final period of the previous government, the entire tenure of the interim government and the first several months of the current government.

"He has performed his duties following the existing rules and regulations," the Home Minister said.

Regarding political criticism against the former President, Salahuddin Ahmed said citizens have the right to express opinions and engage in political protests.

He said various political parties, including opposition groups and the NCP, have made allegations against Md. Shahabuddin, but such statements do not require consideration unless there is a legal basis.

Speaking about the facilities available to the former President, the Home Minister said Md. Shahabuddin will receive all privileges and benefits entitled to him under existing laws.

He added that security provided by the Special Security Force (SSF) and the President Guard Regiment (PGR) will continue for six months. Besides, police and other law enforcement agencies will also ensure his security as required.

Responding to questions about a reported phone conversation between the outgoing President and former Prime Minister, Salahuddin Ahmed said communication is possible from anywhere in the world in the current digital era.

"Whether someone has to go to London to make a phone call seems completely unreasonable to me," he said.

Regarding security arrangements for the Rath Yatra and Ulto Rath festivals, the Home Minister said the government has coordinated with all relevant agencies to ensure peaceful celebrations without any disruption. He added that intelligence agencies have also been working in coordination.

On the issue of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, who was reportedly arrested in Dubai, Salahuddin Ahmed said the government is making maximum efforts to bring him back to Bangladesh. He added that all necessary documents requested by the Dubai authorities have already been sent.

The Home Minister also said police personnel who perform their duties responsibly in serving the country will be rewarded, while those who fail to fulfill their responsibilities will face disciplinary action.
