Dhaka, July 26 (V7N)- A gas crisis has emerged across the capital due to disruption in the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG), causing severe difficulties for CNG-powered vehicle drivers and household consumers.
Since Sunday morning (July 26), long queues have been seen at several CNG filling stations in Dhaka. Despite waiting for hours, many drivers are failing to get an adequate supply of gas.
CNG drivers said they have been standing in lines since early morning as the shortage has disrupted their daily work. They added that the crisis is directly affecting their income and livelihoods.
The impact of the gas shortage is also being felt in residential areas. Many households have reported difficulties in cooking as gas pressure remains too low to operate stoves properly.
Officials at filling stations said the shortage has occurred due to low gas pressure, making it difficult to meet customer demand.
Meanwhile, Petrobangla said LNG supply from the Accelerate Energy terminal in Maheshkhali has remained suspended after a fire incident at the facility last Tuesday. However, a team of experts from the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates began repair and assessment work at the terminal from Thursday.
Petrobangla said around 35 to 40 percent of the country's daily gas supply normally comes from LNG. The country's daily gas demand is approximately 3.8 billion cubic feet, but the average supply has remained around 2.7 billion cubic feet per day since last year.
Authorities said efforts are ongoing to restore normal LNG supply and reduce the impact of the ongoing gas shortage.
